Living income and gender: Why does adopting gender transformative approaches to improve livelihoods in agriculture matter?
Millions of smallholder producers globally are earning below living income estimates, leaving them unable to afford a decent standard of living and making them vulnerable to poverty and other human rights risks. Addressing due diligence challenges in light of current legislative changes provides a valuable opportunity to improve livelihoods holistically.
This webinar, co-hosted by LICOP and the OECD, is a first in a series LICOP will organise to explore good practices on due diligence on living income in dialogue with private companies, policymakers, NGOs and sustainability systems. It will discuss the role of various stakeholders in enabling meaningful due diligence on living income, what guidance is available and how best to make use of it, identify remaining challenges especially in complex fragmented supply chains, explore how living income benchmarks are essential tools for aligning due diligence efforts with international frameworks, and share real-world examples from companies already making progress in closing these gaps.
We will delve into the OECD Handbook on Due Diligence for Enabling Living Incomes and Living Wages in Agriculture, Garment, and Footwear Supply Chains. The OECD handbook guides companies on how to use the OECD due diligence framework for achieving living incomes and living wages in global supply chains. It responds to demands by businesses for practical tools to help translate commitments to living incomes and living wages into action as part of their human rights’ due diligence. The handbook focusses on the agriculture, garment, and footwear sectors where inadequate incomes and wages have been identified as prevalent risks.
