Living Income Work in Cocoa
The cocoa sector has worked to align measurement methods for farmer income. This page compiles the publicly available resources. The Alliance for Living Income in Cocoa* (ALICO) is working towards a shared goal of alignment to unlock deeper understanding and action on improving cocoa farmers’ incomes.
Measurement Resources
The following resources can be used together to assist you on your journey.
- Cocoa Income inventory – provides publicly accessible, validated data on cocoa farming household incomes in an aggregated and anonymised format.
- Cocoa Household Income Study Methodology (CHIS) – a survey methodology for measuring household incomes and comparing against recognised living income benchmarks.
- Living Income Benchmarks (ARI) – the Country Index provides living income estimates for around 200 locations, updated annually for inflation.
- Income Measurement Guidance – this adaptable household questionnaire streamlines how companies assess actual household income. This is an aligned tool with the CHIS.
*ALICO is an alliance focused on coordinating work and learning on living income in the cocoa sector. It is comprised of four of the European cocoa platforms (Swiss Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, Beyond Chocolate, Dutch Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa), World Cocoa Foundation, VOICE Network, and the Living Income Community of Practice.
