The EU passed a deforestation-free regulation in December 2022, which imposes restrictions on certain products in the EU market if they are not produced in accordance with local laws in producing countries, or if they contribute to deforestation or forest degradation. Several organisations have expressed concerns about the impact of this legislation on the livelihood of smallholder farmers. The legislation could potentially create barriers to entry for some farmers /cooperatives, exacerbating poverty among the most vulnerable farmers. In this webinar, we joined Solidaridad, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, Carble and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to discuss whether the new legislation can actually stimulate further investment in payment for environmental services, thereby enhancing the income of farmers.
